Concussion injuries and post-concussion syndrome can lead to feelings of anguish, loss and depression. The inability to participate in your usual activities, the feeling of helplessness in suffering from an invisible injury with no known cure, and the disorientation and other mental and physical symptoms that go along with concussion are just some of the reasons that mental health concerns can arise in conjunction with concussion injuries. (For a list of concussion-related signs and symptoms, click HERE.)
At SMF we urge victims of concussion injuries to seek mental health support in addition to traditional medical care for their physical injury. Many patients find that speaking to a mental health professional can greatly relieve some of the mental anguish associated with dealing with concussion. It is also important to enlist the love and support of trusted friends and family in recovering from concussion, and additional support can be found by joining support groups, whether online or in person. |
